Eric Benbow Receives 2026 CANR Research Career Award

EEB core faculty member Eric Benbow is a community ecologist whose interdisciplinary research examines how insect and microbial communities shape ecological systems and inform applications in human health, disease ecology and environmental management. With joint appointment in MSU's Departments of Entomology and Osteopathic Medical Specialties, his work integrates ecology, entomology and medicine with a strong emphasis on applied, cross‑disciplinary science.

Internationally recognized for contributions to aquatic and terrestrial ecology, forensic science and sustainable agriculture, Benbow has advanced understanding of carrion ecology and decomposition science and helped shape new academic directions worldwide. He has authored or coauthored more than 180 peer‑reviewed journal articles, with research supported by agencies including NIH, NSF, USDA and USAID.

Benbow’s global collaborations span Africa, South America, Asia and Polynesia, where he has worked with partners to address challenges related to disease transmission, biodiversity and food security. A dedicated mentor and educator, he supports students through research training, teaching and outreach, helping prepare graduates for careers across academia, government and industry.

The CANR Excellence in Research Award program recognizes outstanding contributions to Michigan State University’s research mission. The Research Career Award honors individuals with 15 or more years of research experience whose work has had significant impact on academic and external stakeholder communities.
